By console gamer, I mean someone who puts in most of their gaming hours on a console but still plays some games on a pc.
Two things I think: 1) The PC is a superior platform
2) PC players should not be able to use a mouse in DUST.
The first is a statement of fact. The second is a statement of opinion, don't get the two mixed up Edited.
A mouse clearly blows a gaming pad out of the water when it comes to accuracy. No amount of nerfing to the mouse controls on a ps3 will make it fair to gamers who use a game pad. Either the controls won't be nerfed enough and pc gamers will still have a huge advantage OR it will be nerfed too much and pc gamers will be unhappy.
No mice for pc gamers. It's been done before, and the pc gamers annihilated console gamers. For the sake of my sorry ass, don't do it.

Two things I think: 1) The PC and the Console are at equal footing.
2) I don't see a problem with using a mouse in Dust so long as game pad users are given auto-tracking (never to be confused with auto-aim) to compensate.
The first statement is a statement of fact given how technology and game development has improved over the decades. Before now, PCs were superior to consoles. Now consoles are able to play your movies, your games, browse the internet, and shop online. Practically everything a PC can do. The only difference is how they are upgraded.
PC is superior from a technical standpoint is what I was referring to I guess.
I still hold by my point that no amount of attempted balance between a mouse and a gaming pad will actually work. Mark my words. |

Why can't the EVE players adapt to the consoles primary operating device. You might say it's a PC at heart and while I can't argue it isn't But the vast majority of ppl will not use mice and keyboard giving the minority the advantage.
Like you EVE players say. ADAPT OR DIE
QFT
The move is not just like a mouse. Similar, but nowhere near as effective. |

This game was designed for a ps3. Not a PC. And they do have a better control scheme. Do you not remember that one game where you could play with PC gamers on a X-Box. Who always won. Guess. The PC gamer due to the fact they had a Mouse and Keyboard. It's not limited to a few players, but people on ps3 don't want to learn how to use a KBM just to compete with the people already used to it.
And yes I used to play with a mouse and keyboard as i used to be a PC gamer. The fact of the matter is, most players that want to be "Hardcore" and actually involved in the spreadsheets, and politics, and economy of the EVE universe, are probably going to be the ones using KBM. The ones that want to casually play for rankings on the leaderboards, will be the ones using a gamepad. This is a generalization, possibly a stereotype, but it is relatively accurate and there is no arguing that. There will be exceptions to this. Now, what does that mean? Well, the spreadsheets, and politics, and economy, will largely be in Null-sec, so all the "Hardcore" KBM players will be out there, fighting wars, and negotiating, away from those on the gamepad. Sure there will be some gamepad users in Null-sec, but I would be willing to bet they will be all of the Pilots - tanks, dropships, jets, LAV's - as vehicles are much easier to control with a joystick vs. WASD. The gamepad users, will be in High-sec where they have already announced that a match-making system will be in place, so high skill (rank?) players will not be matched with low skill (rank?) players. All of the players that are using KBM in the match-making games, will probably be rated much higher than the gamepad users, and as such they will not generally get placed together, and this wont be an issue. Assuming of course that the match-making system works, and isn't absolutely random like in CoD. Low-sec will probably be a bit of a melting pot. Each control scheme will find a home in this game, and if CCP has to gimp KBM to help it find it's home, I will be very disappointed - mostly in the community, but partially CCP. You have to be kidding me! .. Demoting DS3 players to being nothing more than casual gamers, I find that offending in every way. So just because I dont want to have a M/K sitting in my living room, I wont get the full experience of the game. I could try to get the full experience, but would have my ass handed to me in every match I play.. no way, I rather not play at all. Dust is not the holy grail of FPS.. while I think its an interesting setup, being connected to EVE and all, its not gonna ruin my day if I dont get to play it.. What you are saying is that if anyone wanna compete with the big-boys you have to use M/K.. A control mechanism NOT native to the platform. Now I dont know what CCP has planed regarding M/K, but if the outcome is anything like you describe, I will not be among the players of this game. My opinion on this M/K vs DS3 issue is clearly that all the PC FPS players who wants to play Dust cant or wont adapt to using a DS3. I've been playing FPS on consols for years and I dont see the problem at all. DS3 is the primary controller of the PS3, so use it, or go for the Sharp-Shooter (Move), other successful games like Resistance and Killzone have not supported M/K so why CCP feels obligated to do so, I dont know. The game will never work if M/K and DS3 players are allowed to play in the same match. UnrealT for PS3 didn allow it either, simply because it will give and unfair advantage no matter how you view it. CCP can nerf M/K all they want.. and in the end PC gamers will whine about the M/K experience not being the same as a PC FPS experience. The only sane choice would be to not to include M/K at all, and let the game live within the restrictions of the platform.
also QFT. LIke I had said earlier, people have tried integrating M/K and gaming pads in the same FPS game before, and it hasn't worked.

When it comes down to the political game in Null-sec where the game gets SERIOUS you can bet the ones with assets on the line will be Adapting. And by adapting I mean buying an Eagle Eye or configuring GIMX to give them every advantage they can get. You can scream, yell, whine, cry, and quit. In the end, it won't matter because it WILL happen. So whether CCP implements KB+M or not, unless you stick to pub stomping you WILL face groups of people using it against you at some point.
Not if they don't support KB+M |

We're getting keyboard and mouse (it's been repeatedly promised and confirmed; for the next build, in fact), you can choose to use it or choose to use a controller. Everyone wins. Your tears taste delicious. You're welcome to stick to crappy shooters like Halo if you have trouble with the concept.
Silly pc gamers, thinking that a guy who plays DUST on his ps3 would play halo on the xbox. Want to accuse me of being a CoD fanboy too? |

In your average pub game, kbm vs gamepad might not matter as much. However, as someone has already mentioned, it will be in the higher levels of play that this will make a difference.
A mouse can move much more quickly with much more accuracy than thumbsticks. So if two players of equal skill level and equipment are fighting, the kbm player will almost always win.
CCP is porting this game to PS3 so they can gain a larger audience and possibly appeal to a larger market. So why is it a good idea for them to cater specifically to the EVE players? The whole purpose was to tap into the console fps gamers to add a new dimension to EVE universe.
If EVE players are allowed to have their mice, console players might not stick around because they are getting owned constantly in what would otherwise be an even fight.
The only catering to EVE players that should be done is in properly integrating DUST with the EVE universe. |
